This is Johnny Cash playing “God’s Gonna Cut You Down,” from his posthumous 2006 album, America V: A Hundred Highways.  I was reminded of how great this version of the traditional American folk song is when I heard it being played in the new trailer for the Joel and Ethan Coen’s True Grit.

Like every red-blooded American, I am an admirer of Johnny Cash’s music.  I find his later, darker work particularly moving.  This song is true to the theme of foreboding in his later albums.  It is a powerful song.

If you are for some reason unfamiliar with Cash’s later work, I recommend The Man Comes Around.
