This is Kid Sister playing “Control,” the final track on her 2009 album, Ultraviolet. Kid Sister is a Chicago-based rapper. She worked with Kanye West on song “Pro Nails,” for which Wikipedia claims she is well known.
It is my considered opinion that Ultraviolet is an album of top-quality dance numbers. It is exuberant and highly produced. Most of the album is far poppier than “Control,” but as far as contemporary pop goes, I think it’s hard to beat Kid Sister. It’s not exactly high brow by any means, but given the choice between this and some Ke$ha bullshit, there is absolutely no contest. If you are like me, and suffer from friends who won’t tollerate dancing to funk, or rockabilly, or other genres that don’t get airplay, Kid Sister is a fair middle ground. If you are making a dance playlist, I also recommend “Step,” which features Estelle, and “Right Hand Hi,” as well as “Control.” It’s music that appeals to the base impulses of the plebs, but can still fulfill your patrician tastes, or at least come closer to it.
I have heard this album described as “hipster-hop,” a moniker which I’ve also seen applied to the Knux. The two acts are pretty far apart on the spectrum of sound, but perhaps they share status in hipster culture.
Sincerely,
Reverend Harris
