This is Midlake playing “Winter Dies,” from their new album, The Courage of Others. Midlake plays rock and roll heavily influenced by the folk-rock of the 1970s, and they do a damn good job of it. This album is their third, and I think it is my favorite to date. It’s hard for me to say that, because their 2006 album, The Trials of Van Occupanther was such a gem.
Van Occupanther was a concept album about pioneers in the American West. Despite not being a concept album (to my knowledge), The Courage of Others feels somehow more cohesive than Trials, although that means that it gets boisterous less often—-the rocking solos of “Roscoe” and “Head Home” are no where to be found on Courage. Still, the album as a whole feels less morose, without losing the pensive quality that helps make Midlake so effective.
Also check out “Children of the Grounds” on this album.
Sincerely,
Reverend Harris
