This is The Mumlers playing “St. James Street,” from their 2009 album, Don’t Throw Me Away. The Mumlers are an indie band from San Jose, California. I think their music is best described as folk rock. They remind me a lot of The Growlers, which is another band worth listening to.
I like The Mumlers’ take on an old standard. Their original songs are good too. Listen to “99 Years” on the same album. It has a very similar sound, but it is strangely lighthearted for its gloomy presentation. I enjoy this album a lot. The other Mumlers album I have, Thickets & Stiches, is cleaner-sounding, and also good. If you had to pick just one, though, I think that Don’t Throw Me Away is the obvious choice.
Sincerely,
Reverend Harris
p.s. Speaking of modern versions of “St. James Infirmary Blues,” listen to Snakefarm’s version if you haven’t already.
